Description

Bohumil Eliáš Jr., Sleeping Element, 2023

Sleeping Element is a painting in which Bohumil Eliáš Jr. explores the tension between stillness and latent energy. The composition is divided into two distinctly different sections: an upper area that is almost empty and linear, and a lower one that is denser, more structured and more intense in colour. Their relationship creates the central dynamic of the work. What initially appears calm and enclosed carries within it the suggestion of a force that could emerge at any moment.

The upper part of the painting is exceptionally restrained. Against a pale, subtly textured field, a thin line rises, falls and eventually disappears towards the right-hand side of the composition. It is almost a drawing made in a single gesture. It may evoke a horizon, the outline of a landscape, the curve of a body or simply a trace of movement.

This ambiguity is essential. Eliáš does not offer the viewer a clear illustration, but only a suggestion. The line is specific enough to provoke associations, yet reduced enough to resist a single interpretation.

A thin rectangular outline that almost frames the entire upper field functions in a similar way. It may be read as a boundary, a construction or a spatial diagram. Although highly subtle, it creates the sense that even the apparent emptiness of the upper section is carefully organised and governed by its own internal order.

The lower part of the painting is considerably more substantial. A black structure formed by regular vertical lines creates a large irregular shape that may suggest a mass, a mountain, a vessel, a crater or a body. Its outline is not geometrically precise, creating a contrast with the strict regularity of its internal rhythm.

The collision between the organic contour and the disciplined vertical structure is one of the most powerful aspects of the work. The form appears both natural and technical. It may evoke a geological formation, yet equally a construction or an unknown architecture.

At the lower centre, an intense orange-red field emerges. Partially concealed beneath the dark structure, its position gives the work much of its conceptual force. The coloured area appears like energy contained within matter – like heat, magma, light or a force that for the moment remains beneath the surface.

The title Sleeping Element is particularly apt. The element is not depicted as an explosion or dramatic movement. It is present in a state of rest. This is precisely what creates the tension. The viewer becomes aware of its power even though nothing is “happening” in a conventional narrative sense.

The orange-red colour also forms a strong contrast with the cooler neutral fields. As a result, the lower section can appear almost like a source of internal light. The colour does not attempt to dominate the entire image but is concentrated in one area, where it acquires exceptional intensity.

Between the black structure and the orange centre lies another layer with a different material quality. Its rougher texture suggests a transitional zone – almost a crust or boundary between the outer mass and the energy contained within. The painting therefore acquires an almost geological sense of layering.

Surface plays an essential role. Eliáš alternates delicate, nearly empty areas with strongly textured sections, creating not only visual but also material contrast. The upper part of the work feels light and airy, while the lower section carries a distinct physical weight.

This difference can also be interpreted as the relationship between external calm and internal tension. The upper line feels almost meditative, while the lower mass contains an energy that has not yet been released. The work therefore deals more with anticipation than with action.

Bohumil Eliáš Jr.’s sculptural way of thinking is evident here as well. The individual parts of the painting do not feel merely like colours applied to a surface, but almost like independent layers and masses. The viewer perceives their differing weight, texture and spatial relationship.

The composition is also very carefully balanced. Although the lower section contains far more mass and colour, the emptiness above provides a sufficient counterweight. The painting therefore never feels heavy. The tension between the two halves maintains the balance of the whole.

In an interior, Sleeping Element can function as a refined yet distinctive solitary work. The 60 × 60 cm format is highly versatile and can work well in both residential and professional settings. Its largely neutral palette creates a sense of calm, while the orange-red centre provides a strong enough colour accent to give the work presence.

It can enter into particularly effective dialogue with natural materials, stone, concrete, dark wood or metal. In a minimalist interior, the clarity of the composition will stand out, while in a more materially rich environment, the different textures within the painting can come to the fore.

From a collector’s perspective, the date of 2023 is also significant. The work shows Bohumil Eliáš Jr. at a point where he is working with an increasingly reduced visual language, capable of creating strong tension through just a few essential elements – line, structure, colour and empty space.

Within the context of the exhibition Two paths, one name, Sleeping Element demonstrates that, much like in his glass objects, Eliáš also thinks spatially in painting. He does not treat the image simply as a flat surface, but as a system of layers, hierarchies and visual relationships.
