It is solid, precise and clearly defined, yet at the same time it conveys a strong sense of movement. Sharp diagonals within the coloured layers rise upwards, individual planes intersect, and the entire object seems to have been captured at the very moment it is about to change direction.

Here Petra Hřebačková works with one of the most compelling qualities of glass – its ability to unite mass, colour and light until the boundaries between them become difficult to distinguish.

The basic silhouette of the work is relatively compact. Towards the top, however, it narrows and tilts, creating a pronounced vertical dynamism. The physical weight of the glass therefore never feels heavy. On the contrary, the object seems to grow, stretch or be carried upwards by an invisible current.

The work is built around a striking combination of blue and green glass, both colours being present within the material itself and defining the object’s visual character. The intensity is therefore not simply an effect created by surrounding light – the glass itself is genuinely this vividly coloured.

Transparency allows the colours to influence one another when viewed through different sections. From one angle, a deeper blue may dominate; from another, green becomes more prominent. The colour itself does not change – what changes is the amount of material through which we are looking and the way light passes through it.

Avis therefore achieves a remarkably rich spatial and optical effect using a deliberately limited palette.

Hřebačková’s process combines careful planning, work with individual coloured glass elements, thermal processing and several stages of subsequent finishing. After firing, the glass must undergo controlled cooling, as differences in material thickness can create considerable internal stress.

Grinding then follows. For an object based on sharp edges and geometric intersections, this stage is crucial. Every plane affects the way light enters the material, reflects from polished surfaces and passes through the coloured layers.

The various parts are subsequently assembled and joined, followed by further grinding and finishing. These stages may be repeated several times before the final form is achieved. Polishing is not merely cosmetic. A perfectly smooth surface allows light to penetrate the glass and reveal its internal colour structure. It is this finish that gives the edges their clarity and the coloured layers their visual intensity.

Behind the apparent lightness of Avis lies considerable technical discipline.

Avis reacts strongly to its surroundings. In soft, diffused light, the subtler green and grey-blue gradients come to the fore. Stronger side lighting or natural daylight, on the other hand, emphasises the sharp diagonal lines and makes certain parts of the piece almost glow. The view across the edges of the work is also interesting. Where the thickness of the glass increases, there is an optical intensification of colour. Turquoise and blue hues can therefore appear significantly more concentrated when viewed from the side, whilst from the front they appear much lighter and more transparent.

Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

The result is a piece whose colouring is never entirely consistent. Morning light, the late-afternoon sun and the gallery’s spotlights all reveal a slightly different aspect of the same work each time.

Measuring 42 cm in height, the piece has sufficient presence to serve as a standalone decorative feature, yet is not so large as to require a spacious gallery setting. It works very well on a freestanding plinth, a low console table or a chest of drawers, where there is plenty of visually uncluttered space around it.

The space surrounding the object is particularly important. Given its pronounced internal structure, Avis should not compete with an overly complex background or an abundance of additional decorative elements. A light wall will emphasise its colour and transparency, while a darker background can enhance the luminosity of the edges and give the object a more dramatic character.

An ideal placement is somewhere the natural light changes throughout the day. The piece does not need to stand directly by a window – direct light is not essential. Side lighting is often even more effective, as it brings out the individual cuts, edges and internal colour transitions.

The work is particularly well suited to a contemporary residential interior, a representative study, an entrance hall or any space where it can function as a strong standalone piece. Thanks to its combination of cooler blue, turquoise and green tones, it can create an interesting contrast with warmer natural materials such as wood, stone or neutral textiles.

Created in 2020, Avis represents a highly recognisable aspect of Petra Hřebačková’s practice: the combination of vivid colour, geometric construction, optical play and technically precise execution. For collectors, the work is particularly compelling because it brings together two qualities that do not always coexist in contemporary glass – strong visual accessibility and, at the same time, considerable material and technical sophistication.

The work also comes from a period of the artist’s already mature practice, following many years of exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad, with her work also represented in public collections. For collectors of contemporary Czech glass, Avis therefore represents more than simply a colourful object for an interior. It is an example of a distinctive artistic language in which colour is not added to a completed form.

Colour itself becomes the space, light and structure of the work. This is precisely where the strength of Avis lies: the longer we look at it, the less we perceive it as a static object. The glass remains physically still, yet the lines within it continue to move.

More about the artist >>> here <<<

More works by Petra Hřebačková >>> here <<<

Popis: Avis, barevné sklo tavené ve formě a následně k sobě lepené za studena, broušeno

Rozměry: 42 x 25 x 8cm

Autor: Petra Hřebačková

Datace: 2020

[34,20

post-86","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-v-galerii","product_cat-petra-hrebackova","first","instock","taxable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple
["GET
