Description
Bohumil Eliáš Jr., Cheerful Pond, 2026
Cheerful Pond is an intimate painting by Bohumil Eliáš Jr. in which a strict geometric structure meets a soft, organic form of intense turquoise. The composition feels calm and balanced, yet it contains a subtle tension between architecture and nature, between order and something that deliberately escapes it. It is precisely this combination that gives the work its lightness, playfulness and visual clarity.
At first glance, attention is drawn to the central turquoise area. Its shape is irregular, soft and almost fluid. It may evoke a small pond, a puddle, an island or simply a coloured trace spreading through space. Compared with the geometric structures surrounding it, the form feels spontaneous and natural.
The title Cheerful Pond reinforces this association while introducing a gently playful tone. This is not a realistic landscape or a depiction of a particular place. The pond functions more as a sign – a coloured organic element inserted into a precisely organised pictorial space.
The relationship between this soft form and the surrounding geometry is fundamental to the work. The turquoise area occupies the centre of the composition and acts as its visual focal point. Its vivid colour immediately attracts the eye, contrasting with the muted beige, grey, black and white tones around it.
Above it lies a large pale field articulated by regular vertical lines. Its rhythm may suggest a curtain, a façade, architectural louvres or a structural system. The precision of this element contrasts with the softness of the pond, creating the impression that two different worlds meet within the image – the constructed and the organic.
A similar effect is created by the black area behind it. It functions as a deeper spatial plane while simultaneously emphasising both the pale vertical structure and the turquoise centre. Black is therefore not merely a colour here, but a means of constructing depth.
The left side of the painting introduces another kind of visual information. A narrow strip filled with delicate drawing, lines, numbers and signs may recall a technical plan, a map or a record of a structural system. It adds another layer of precision and rationality to the composition.
This element is particularly interesting in relation to the title itself. Cheerful Pond sounds light and almost poetic, while part of the composition feels technical and analytical. The contrast between the title and the visual structure introduces a subtle sense of irony and playfulness.
The lower part of the work is divided into several horizontal bands. A darker brown field acts almost like ground or a base on which the turquoise form rests. Below it, a lighter area opens up, enriched with texture and delicate linear detail.
A more relief-like pale fragment appears in the lower left section. Its irregular texture disrupts the smoothness of the surrounding fields and introduces a material accent. It may suggest a natural surface, sediment or a trace of matter.
This interplay between different surfaces is characteristic of Bohumil Eliáš Jr.’s practice. The painting is not based solely on colour and drawing, but also on the relationships between different material qualities. Smooth fields alternate with pronounced textures, precise lines with organic forms.
The composition therefore appears almost like a small model of space. Its individual parts may evoke architecture, landscape, cartography or construction, yet none of these readings is definitive. Eliáš leaves ample room for the viewer’s own interpretation.
The way the painting plays with scale is equally compelling. From one perspective, the turquoise form may be a small pond within a landscape; from another, it is simply an abstract field of colour. The vertical structure above it may resemble a building, a wall or a purely geometric pattern.
This instability of scale reinforces the sense that the painting represents a small world of its own – an environment that can be both specific and entirely imaginary. Despite the precision of its organisation, the composition never feels rigid. The coloured centre brings lightness and vitality.
In an interior, Cheerful Pond can function as a refined and highly approachable solitary work. The 50 × 50 cm format is versatile, and its predominantly neutral palette allows it to integrate easily into a modern residential or professional setting. At the same time, the turquoise provides a sufficiently strong accent to give the work a clear presence.
It can work particularly well alongside light wood, stone, concrete or neutral textiles. Its visual clarity makes it well suited to minimalist interiors, but it can also function as a quieter counterpoint in a space containing stronger design elements.
From a collector’s perspective, the date of 2026 is significant. This is a current work by Bohumil Eliáš Jr., demonstrating his ability to work with a limited number of elements while still creating an image with a distinctive character and clear spatial tension.
Within the context of the exhibition Two paths, one name, je Cheerful Pond is also important because it reveals a lighter and more playful aspect of the artist’s current painting practice. Alongside darker or more structurally intense works, it shows that Eliáš can explore the same themes – space, construction, geometry and organic form – through a gentler visual language.
The strength of the painting lies precisely in its apparent simplicity. Cheerful Pond uses only a few essential elements, yet their careful arrangement creates a pictorial space that feels open, calm and at the same time vividly alive.
